You're experiencing some now, and I'll watch with interest this Joshua Convergence. Pick up Grady Cothen's account of the fundamentalist takeover or John Merritt's "betrayal." He was a longtime missionary. Walter Shurden has a good one too.Callyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11510018008596323777noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19261954.post-1159569191251730142006-09-29T17:33:00.000-05:002006-09-29T17:33:00.000-05:00As usual, a great summary and observations. I like the way you put it towards the end, I really think if we sat down together and talked to one another, prayed with and for one another, and got to know one another that we would realize that even though we may disagree on certain matters we are on the same side and need to work together for the Kingdom. Any and everything that can be done to foster sitting down with one another to talk and pray should be given the highest priority. So much of the "differences" between us are so minor. It is amazing to see how Satan has used these minor issues to divide us.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19261954.post-1159559363005483152006-09-29T14:49:00.000-05:002006-09-29T14:49:00.000-05:00KevinI know that this is a passion of yours, that ...Kevin

I know that this is a passion of yours, that we would be less militant in our language and would talk to each other instead of at each other. Unfortunately, I am also pessimistic about it happening.

**********

Ben,

I actually wasn't thinking of Landmarkism when I made that statement, although I still don't believe that Landmarkism has a strong biblical foundation. I was thinking more about the alcohol issue when I made that statement.

I have to disagree strongly with your last statement. Surely you are not saying that the only good disciples are Baptists. My experience is that there are plenty of "good Baptists" who are lousy disciples, and there are many non-Baptists who are good disciples of Jesus.

**********

Tony,

Thanks for the link. I thought his comparison between Job/God and younger leaders/leaders of the resurgence was over the top. I respect the leaders of the resurgence, but I do NOT consider them to be infallible.Tim Sweatmanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12207080258485611356noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19261954.post-1159551987489285792006-09-29T12:46:00.000-05:002006-09-29T12:46:00.000-05:00Some Younger Preachers Need to Put their hands on ...Some Younger Preachers Need to Put their hands on their mouths a video clip from the Joshua ConvergenceTony Kummerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04952864947581129429noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19261954.post-1159532938099076272006-09-29T07:28:00.000-05:002006-09-29T07:28:00.000-05:00Tim, I have noticed in a few of our recent posts y...Tim,

I have noticed in a few of our recent posts you refer to those Southern Baptists who base their beliefs and standards on "tradition" and not scripture. In this post you say, "but I resist efforts to cloak standards based on tradition, culture, or history with the mantle of biblical authority". I want you to know that those of us who support the new IMB policies and reject alien immersions, base our beliefs and practices on the Bible and not "tradition, culture, or history". I have no desire to have this debate with you again. However I wish you would not imply that the Landmark wing of Southern Baptists is basing their beliefs on tradition. Yes, we use historical examples to back up our biblical position, but the other side attempts to do this as well. Tom Ascol and Gene Bridges are examples of this. I know you are probably thinking well, that's just your interpretation of scripture, but remember, the Methodists and Pentecostals would say eternal security is just our interpretation of scripture.

Lastly, just a quick note when you said, "I pray that all of us have the desire to make disciples of Jesus Christ rather than making good Baptists". How can we do one without the other. A good Baptists will be a good disciple and a good disciple will be a good Baptist!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19261954.post-1159491554125764362006-09-28T19:59:00.000-05:002006-09-28T19:59:00.000-05:00Great post Tim,I agree we should get together.
